City water supply status for 2021

Here’s some need-to-know information for the week

City water supply status for 2021

In May of each year, the city evaluates its water supply status to determine whether customer water restrictions should be imposed under the city-adopted Drought Plan. Water restriction evaluations are based on snowpack levels in the mountains west of Boulder, the city’s reservoir storage levels and the city’s allocation of water from Northern Water’s Colorado-Big Thompson (CBT) Project.

As of May 1, 2021, the water content in the Silver Lake Watershed snowpack and the city’s CBT allocation for the year are average. The city reservoir storage levels are below average compared to the past decade due to winter maintenance, and reservoirs may not fill during spring runoff. However, water restrictions are not necessary at this time as current water levels are projected to be adequate for water supply needs this year.

Staff will continue to monitor water supply conditions throughout the summer. Due to dry conditions across the region, and recognizing there may still be dry conditions ahead, the community will see ongoing water conservation outreach efforts to encourage efficient water use, including press releases, social media, website updates and regional coordination. The city has been coordinating with regional water providers to provide coordinated public information regarding drought status and the water supply status of individual water providers. The city’s Water Conservation Program helps coordinate wise water use outreach efforts and offers no-cost programs to residential and commercial customers. Outreach will be adapted to water supply conditions throughout the summer.

The Source Water Master Plan includes more detailed information about management of the city’s water supply.
