Candidate filing period opens Aug. 5 – 25

Community members interested in helping shape the future of Boulder are encouraged to consider running for City Council in the upcoming election on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025. This year, four council seats are up for election, for three-year terms in order to transition to even year elections. The next mayoral election will take place in November 2026.

To be eligible to run for Boulder City Council, candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, and have resided within the City of Boulder for at least one year prior to the election. In addition, candidates must be qualified electors under Colorado law and must not have previously been elected to three or more terms on City Council.

To have your name certified for the November ballot, all steps must be completed between Aug. 5 and Aug. 25, 2025.

Interested candidates must complete an online Intent to Run form, which will be available starting Aug. 5. Once submitted, the City Clerk’s Office will verify eligibility. After verification, the Elections Administrator will schedule a short appointment (typically under 15 minutes) for the candidate to take an oath and receive their nomination petition.

Appointments are available Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Each candidate must gather at least 25 – and no more than 35 – signatures from registered City of Boulder voters. Completed petitions must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 to the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building information desk (Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

The City Clerk’s Office will review all submitted petitions and contact candidates with a determination of sufficiency.
