Boulder Fire-Rescue Community Academy

The BFR Community Academy is a unique hands‑on learning experience designed to give community members an inside look at how Boulder Fire-Rescue keeps our city safe. From fireground operations to emergency medical services, wildland firefighting, rescue techniques, and communications—you’ll learn directly from the experts who respond to our community every day.

The Community Academy turns curious community members into informed, prepared partners in public safety—while giving you a firsthand look at the people and work behind every 911 call.

Academy at a Glance

  • Length: 9 weeks | 10 classes
  • Schedule: Wednesdays, 6–9 p.m. (one Saturday field day)
  • Capacity: 25 participants
  • Location: Multiple Boulder Fire-Rescue stations & training facilities
  • Applications close: April 8, 2026
  • Application Review: April 8-10, 2026
  • Notifications of acceptance: April 10, 2026

This program is likely to have more than 25 applicants, applications will be reviewed and then those who are in the academy cohort will be notified. Before you apply for this program, please make sure that you are available to attend all classes. This is a cohort based program in which each week's learning builds on the week prior. There is an expectation that applicants can commit to the above dates, will arrive on time, follow all safety instructions and wear required protective equipment when directed. This is not a firefighter certification training.

Who Should Apply?

  • 18 years old or older
  • Boulder residents
  • City of Boulder employees
  • Community members who are interested and engaged
  • Individuals who can commit to the full 9‑week calendar

Applicants will be prioritized based on residency.
