The City of Boulder has completed an extensive evaluation of conceptual designs to make travel on Folsom Street between Pine Street and Colorado Avenue safer, more connected and more comfortable. Community members are invited to learn more about the resulting recommended conceptual street design at the in-person Open House on Tuesday, June 10 from 4-6:30 p.m. or through a virtual option available on the project website.
Participants can drop in at any time to explore the recommendation and learn about next steps. Staff will be available to answer questions and receive feedback. Public comments are welcome and will help city staff finalize the evaluation and the recommended design, both of which will be presented to the Transportation Advisory Board and City Council for a board recommendation and council action as the next step in the design process.
Folsom Street is a busy north-south corridor in central Boulder with a history of crashes involving all roadway users. Vulnerable road users – people walking, biking and rolling – have been disproportionately impacted by serious crashes on the corridor. Folsom Street is also on the city’s High Risk Network where future severe crashes are most likely to occur compared to other parts of the city.
Boulder is a Vision Zero city with the goal of ending serious injury and fatal crashes and reducing all other crashes. A Safe Streets Report found that 67% of serious or fatal crashes occur on arterial streets despite them making up only 17% of Boulder’s total street network. Based on these findings, the city is pursuing the Core Arterial Network (CAN) initiative: a comprehensive, data-driven roadway redesign effort that will make travel along Boulder’s main streets safer, more comfortable and convenient for all as supported by Boulder City Council. This part of Folsom Street is a priority segment of the CAN and a key part of Boulder’s core multimodal transportation network for walking, bicycling, driving and taking local and regional transit.
