Boulder can be a great place to enjoy at night. As fall sets in and daylight hours shorten, traveling with care becomes even more important.

Be aware.

  • On Halloween night, remember that children are excited and may move in unpredictable ways.

  • When driving, look for and yield to people walking, biking and rolling. Pay extra care at crosswalks and intersections, and when turning, backing up, and entering or exiting driveways.

  • Stick to posted speed limits, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic.

  • Avoid distractions such as texting or adjusting the radio.

  • When walking or biking, watch for cars in all directions before crossing streets and driveways.

Stay seen.

  • No matter how you travel, use proper lights and reflective gear to stay visible when it's dark, year-round.

  • Dress in bright or reflective clothing and carry lights, especially in stormy weather.

  • When biking or using a scooter at night, use lights and reflectors. Between dusk and dawn, Boulder Revised Code requires that bikes have a mounted white light on the front and a red reflector on the back. The same applies to scooters and other similar devices.

  • Add sidelights or wheel reflectors to be more visible.

Be predictable.

  • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.  Do not cross between parked cars.

  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths whenever available.

  • Walk right and pass left. Slow down, yield and give space when passing.

  • Signal audibly to let others know you're passing.

Be mindful.

  • When turning or crossing, smile, signal or wave.

  • On shared paths, move with care and make space for others.

  • During poor weather conditions, adjust your speed and increase your following distance.

Enjoy the journey.
