The East Age Well Center will be impacted by the city’s East Boulder Community Center (EBCC) Renovation Project.

The East Boulder Community Center (EBCC) has never seen a major renovation or upgrade since it was originally constructed in 1992. This project will renovate and expand the EBCC to meet modern recreation needs and provide core program elements like swimming, fitness and older adult services that the community desires. It also supports long-term sustainability and cost efficiency through a phased design and construction approach that replaces aging building systems, reduces lifecycle costs, and advances the City’s energy and climate goals.

The first phase of construction at the EBCC is scheduled to begin in Q1 (March) of 2027 in the East Age Well Center portion of the building. The East Age Well Center will experience both facility and services impacts beginning in February 2027 as Older Adult Services prepares for the first phase of construction. This phase will focus on the most critical system updates, including air handling units, roof and building improvements. Recreation Center operations for the recreation wing of the building will continue as normal during the majority of the first phase in construction. Impact Timeline

The East Age Well Center will experience both facility and service impacts during the first phase of construction

• The East Age Well Center will remain open through Feb. 12, 2027.
• Between Feb. 15 and 26, 2027, East Age Well Center operations will be closed as staff work to transition out of the facility in preparation for construction.
• Beginning March 1, 2027, East Age Well Center programming will transition to alternate locations; where possible, programming will be moved to the North Boulder Recreation Center or West Age Well Center, so program locations may vary.

Details for impacted February and March programming will be available in the Winter Let’s Age Well Program Guide in November 2026. Plans for continuing services and programs will be shared in late 2026.

Drop-In Fitness Class Impacts

Recreation members interested in impacts to Drop-In Fitness classes that are currently located in the Ballroom at the East Age Well Center should visit the Drop-In Calendar on SmartRec, call Boulder Parks and Recreation at 303-441-4400 or stop in and speak to a customer service representative at any Recreation or Age Well Center.

East Age Well Center Renovation FAQs

What can customers expect during the renovation process?

• Programs and services will be relocated and may be rescheduled. Staff will work to minimize disruptions and maintain services.
• West Age Well Center will remain fully operational during impacts to the East Age Well Center.
• The East Boulder Community Center (EBCC) operations for the recreation wing of the building will continue as normal during the majority of the first phase in construction. Some impacts may be expected, but these impacts will be shared out in advance.

Why are we doing this?

• Goal: Create a better, safer, more comfortable and more energy-efficient community space that will serve the community for decades to come.
• EBCC has never received a renovation or major upgrade to its systems.
• The building is an ideal candidate for a renovation. This project focuses on fixing and upgrading the space so that it works better for everyone.

• Upgraded heating, cooling and air systems to improve indoor comfort year-round and address ongoing daily maintenance needs.
• Modern mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that reduce breakdowns and improve reliability.
• Roof and building envelope improvements for energy efficiency.
• Restrooms and other areas brought up to current ADA accessibility standards.
• Updated finishes and furniture for a more welcoming, refreshed environment.
