Future of Recreation Centers Impacts to East Age Well Center

The East Age Well Center will be impacted by the city’s Future of Recreation Centers project.

The East Boulder Community Center (EBCC) building is one of the city’s top energy users and an ideal candidate for a retrofit. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are outdated and not energy-efficient, but the building's structure is sound, making a retrofit a prime opportunity to reduce energy consumption and refresh the space. This deep energy retrofit project involves updating these systems with modern, efficient ones and improving the building's energy efficiency. This will reduce energy consumption and enhance the building’s performance. A first phase of construction is estimated to start at the EBCC, which includes the East Age Well Center, in early 2027 and will focus on the most critical system updates, including air handling units, roof and envelope improvements. Recreation Center operations for the recreation wing of the building will continue as normal during the majority of the first phase in construction. Find answers to frequently asked questions on the city's website.

The East Age Well Center is likely to experience both facility and service impacts during the first phase of construction, scheduled to begin in early 2027. Plans for continuing services and programs will be shared in late 2026.

East Age Well Center Deep Energy Retrofit

What can customers expect during construction/retrofit process?

  • Programs and services may be relocated or rescheduled, but staff will work to minimize disruptions and maintain services.
  • West Age Well Center will remain fully operational during impacts to the East Age Well Center.
  • Specific plans for relocating services and programs during construction will be shared in late 2026 as we get more specific information.

Why are we doing this?

  • Goal: Create a better, safer, more comfortable and more energy-efficient community space that will serve the community for decades to come.
  • EBCC is one of the city’s highest energy-using buildings and many of its systems are outdated.
  • The building itself is sound. This project focuses on fixing and upgrading the space so that it works better for everyone.

What improvements can you expect?

  • Upgraded heating, cooling and air systems to improve indoor comfort year-round and address ongoing daily maintenance needs.
  • Modern mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that reduce breakdowns and improve reliability.
  • Roof and building envelope improvements for energy efficiency.
  • Restrooms and other areas brought up to current ADA accessibility standards.
  • Updated finishes and furniture for a more welcoming, refreshed environment.
  • Work will focus on meeting Boulder's energy code standards and environmental goals to reduce energy consumption and improve building performance.
