Health and Wellness Internships
Position Objective
Students will smoothly transition from the classroom to the professional world through our internship program, which provides hands-on experience in community fitness and wellness within a parks and recreation department.
Interns have the opportunity to make a direct positive impact on the health and wellness of the Boulder community through private training and class instruction. Each intern is paired with a mentor(s) aligned with their career interests to ensure a meaningful learning experience.
Those interested in exercise programming for diverse populations can tailor their internship by selecting specific programs to engage with, including private training, small group registered classes, and drop-in classes. With three recreation centers serving the community, our offerings include yoga, weight training, sports-specific training, personal training, nutrition coaching, special events, and more. All programs adhere to the guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties will vary depending upon the internship path the intern pursues.
- Work with all ages to deliver fitness and wellness programs and services (youth through older adults).
- Audit, evaluate and participate in classes and events and shadow instructors.
- Shadow and assist staff in the daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities of best practices in program management.
- Support ongoing marketing efforts.
- Attend required staff and internship meetings.

Requirements
- Health and Wellness Promotions, Recreation, Exercise Science, or related major/classwork
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Willingness to work with people of all ages
- Proficient with Excel, Word, One Drive, Teams, Zoom, Microsoft Office
Weekly Commitment
- Interns typically work several days a week to meet their college credit requirement. Schedules are flexible and may include mornings, evening and weekends.The internship schedule can be flexed to accommodate an intern’s outside obligations.
Desired Qualifications
- CPR/AED/1st Aid certification
- Personal Training or Group Exercise certification (completed or in progress)
Working Conditions
- Ability to work in multiple locations, some evenings, and weekends.
